What are securities?

Fixed Income Securities are a broad category of debt securities issued by an organisation to raise funds from investors to finance their activities. In return for the funds, the organisation promises to pay interest in pre-determined instalments (coupon payments) and return the money invested on the maturity date.Fixed Income Securities or Bonds include government and corporate bonds, and offer either fixed or variable (floating) interest payments. There are several other types of Fixed Income products, including asset backed securities such as residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS) and hybrids. These offer a higher yield but can be converted into equity on a set conversion date.

The level of risk on a bond for any one entity is determined by the capital structure. In the event of default for instance senior bonds are paid out prior to subordinated bonds.
